I waked this morning, first work day of the year, with China on my mind. Suddenly I felt the need to talk Mandarin. Looking for courses of this language I found mandarim.net, will it be good? I sent them an email (in Portuguese, of course).

When I started reading the news, I faced Matias Spektor – that is in charge of the Center for International Relations of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) in Rio, pointing out that Brazil has to change its perspective when the subject is China. Inflation and a new middle class that reaches the consumer market will demand products at low cost and businessmen will certainly look for China to supply this huge market.

He is suggesting Brazil creates a major diplomatic operation approach to the Asian country, with staff who speak Mandarin and know the power centers of Beijing.

Good intuition is following me this brand new year. Ni hao! (China hello!)

Shanghai World Expo 2010

The theme of the Shanghai World Expo 2010 is: “Better City, Better Life”, referring to the common wish for better living standards in future urban environments. Through different sub-themes, Expo 2010 will create blueprints for future cities and harmonious urban life styles. Smart buildings, smart grids that will create greater energy efficiency, intelligent transport systems that can get our cities moving again, multimedia conferencing systems and teleworking technologies that will reduce travel : ICTs have an important role in urban sustainability. ITU is working on many fronts to foster the use of green ICTs to reduce green house gases. This ITU workshop particularly aims at capturing student visions of the role for ICTs in providing for urban sustainability. The workshop is calling for original academic presentations offering innovative approaches addressing this challenge (submission deadline : 15 March) and a prize fund totaling $10,000 will be awarded to the three best presentations.

A Feira Industrial Portuguesa, no Parque das Nações, em Lisboa, vai acolher, de 7 a 10 de Outubro, o “Portugal Tecnológico 2009″, segunda edição do evento que procura mostrar o que melhor se faz na área tecnológica em Portugal.

Portugal Tecnológico vai ocupar uma área superior a 15.000 m2, onde serão apresentadas “as melhores soluções em setores como a Energia – especialmente energias renováveis, Telecomunicações, Educação, Saúde e Mobilidade, a que se juntam alguns dos mais bem sucedidos processos de E-government europeu”.

Argentina and Brazil: things are no good at all.

Argentina, 3rd partner is the post where I made some comments on the conflicts Brazilian industries have with our “brother” Argentina.

Yesterday, another meeting between Brazil and Argentina took place but things are not going very well. This is the 5th meeting to make commercial peace among the countries.

The President of Abimovel (furniture Association) told that he will not come back again to Argentina to discuss any agreement as Argentinians do not fulfil their promises. Import licences approvals are being delayed despite the Argentinian commitment to solve that and the initiative of Brazilian companies to reduce their exports to that country.

Let´s see if something good will happen in the meeting today.

Brasil e Argentina se reúnem em 14 de julho próximo, em Brasília, para ver se o Brasil responde às medidas protecionistas da Argentina, em função da crise financeira global desde o ano passado. A premissa é de que a Argentina estaria comprando itens da China em vez de mantê-los na pauta de importação do Brasil. Estão aí os móveis, têxteis, calçados e eletrodomésticos de linha branca. Será? Ninguém confirma mas a reunião tratará do tema e discute-se no governo se o Brasil entra com processo na Organização Mundial do Comércio (OMC) contra as várias barreiras do governo de Cristina Kirchner que afetaram o comércio bilateral. Vamos acompanhar.

The brand Lotto and Ponte Preta.

The new supplier of sports equipment to the football team of Ponte Preta is Lotto, an Italian company. The debut of the new uniform will be on June 6, against the Portuguesa de Desportos.

In the 1980s, the Lotto began to create the first models of shoes for football and has signed major contracts with renowned international players and teams – John Newcombe, Andrei Gomes and Jose Luis Clerc, in tennis, Ruud Gullit and the Dutch national selection . In the same period Lotto expanded its operations for the export market. Lotto today distributes its products over 60 countries.

Founded in the town of Montebelluna by the Caberlotto family in 1973 (when the family was the owner of football club FC Treviso), the Lotto made its debut as a manufacturer of sports shoes in June of that year. Today they provide material, among other teams, for Lotto Fiorentina, Palermo, Udinese and Chievo Verona, Italy; Borussia Mönchengladbah and Mainz, Germany; and Sochaux Toulouse, France, the Pumas, in Mexico, and the selections of Ukraine and Colombia. The fourth edition of the Asian Film Market, which runs Oct. 11-14 during the Pusan Intl. Film Festival (Oct. 8-16), is offering a 30% discount to attendees who register early. Packages include price cuts on stands and complimentary accommodation. Event takes 30% off price for early birds.

Pusan International Film Festival, held annually in Busan (or Pusan), South Korea, is one of the most significant film festivals in Asia. Its focus is to present new films and first-time directors, especially those from Asian countries. Another notable feature is the appeal of the festival to young people, both in terms of the large youthful audience it attracts and through its efforts to develop and promote young talent.

Minas Trend Preview

The state of Minas Gerais will have its 4th edition of the Minas Trend Preview, between April 28th and May 2nd 2009, at the same time as the state celebrates the “Year of France in Brazil.”

Approximately 170 exhibitors from clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories, will occupy the area that presented a growth of 30% from last year. Business are currently budgeted at approximately U.S. $ 7.5 million.

Promoted by Fiemg – Federation of Industries of Minas Gerais State and produced by Dupla Assessoria, this is the only event of pre-launch of fashion in the country. Apex-Brasil invited journalists from China, Poland, Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, Sweden, Portugal, France and Argentina, and buyers from UK, Spain, Costa Rica, U.S., Canada, Australia and France.
